HIPAA Privacy & Security Programs

The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) was signed into law in 1996. Providers were required to comply with these regulations on the following schedule: Privacy standards compliance -- April 14, 2003; Transaction & Code Sets compliance -- October 15, 2002 (a one-year extension was available to covered entities that applied for the extension giving them until October 15, 2003 to comply); Employer Identifier standard compliance -- July 30, 2004; and, lastly, Security Rule compliance -- April 21, 2005.
